from a depth of approximately 12 feet below surface grade(bsg), level with the base of the
former UST. The soil samples were collected from the bucket of the backhoe used to gather soil
from the excavation.
In order to evaluate soil disposal options, a four-point composite soil sample, labeled CS-(1-4),
was collected from the soil stockpile by IT personnel under the supervision and direction of Ms.
Michelle Sterni-Le of the SJCPHS-EHD on October 3,2001. The composite soil sample was
collected by pushing the sample tubes into the stockpile until full.
After each sample was collected, the ends of the sample tube were covered with teflon tape and
capped. The samples were then appropriately labeled, placed in a cooler with ice,and
transported under chain-of-custody protocol to the analytical laboratory. A copy of the chain of
custody is included in Appendix C.
2.3 Sample Analyses
The samples were transported and submitted under chain of custody documentation to
McCampbell Analytical Labs,Inc., an FLAP-certified laboratory in Pacheco, California. The
soil samples were analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons as diesel(TPH-D)under EPA
method 8015 (modified), and for benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes(BTEX)
constituents under EPA method 8020.
2.4 Soil Sample Analytical Results
TPH-D was detected in the analysis of composite soil sample CS-(1,4) at a concentration of 3.9
parts per million(ppm). No other analytes were found in the laboratory analysis. Copies of the
laboratory analytical reports are included in Appendix C. Analytical results are summarized in
Table 1 and depicted in Figure 2.
3.0 Soil and Rinsate Disposal
Approximately 700 gallons of rinsate were generated and transported under hazardous waste
manifest on October 3, 2001 to Romic Chemical Corporation in East Palo.Alto, California for
disposal under Manifest No. 99631215. A copy of the hazardous waste manifest is included in
Appendix D.
CNCD\10-30-01\0:SHAM\US1101-0076.doc 3
