Soil samples
D 1, D2, PL 1 and PL2 were analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPHg), the
volatile aromatic compounds benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and total xylenes (BTEX), and
the seven fuel oxygenates methyl-tert-butyl ether (MTBE), diisopropyl ether (DIPE), ethyl
tert-butyl ether (ETBE), tert-amyl methyl ether (TAME), tert-butanol (TBA), methanol and
ethanol by Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Method 8260B. No analyses were
performed on the soil stockpile samples.
Soil Analytical Results
Soils encountered below the bottom of the dispenser and product line trenches consisted of
very dark gray, plastic, sandy clay to approximately 4 feet bsg and yellowish brown, dense,
fine-grained, silty sand to total depth of the borings (5 feet bsg). No groundwater was
encountered in the hand auger borings.
The soil samples were analyzed by Kiff on 25 and 27 April 2001. Soil analytical results are
summarized in Table 1. Copies of the analytical reports and chain -of -custody documents are
contained in Attachment B.
Concentrations of 1400 and 440 milligrams per kilogram (parts per million or ppm) TPHg
were reported in the soil samples (D 1 and D2) collected under the dispensers. Concentrations
of toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes ranging from 0.97 to 140 ppm were also reported in soil
samples D 1 and D2. No BTEX compounds were reported in soil samples PL 1 and PL2.
Concentrations of 1.6, 0.014 and 0.021 ppm MTBE were reported in soil samples D1, PL 1
and PL2, respectively. No other fuel oxygenates were reported in the soil samples.
Distribution
A copy of this report should be forwarded to:
Mr. Michael Kith, R.E.H.S.
San Joaquin County Environmental Health Division
304 East Weber Avenue, 3`d Floor
Stockton, California 95202
144SoiISmp1gRpt5-01
Project No. 7144.11 2 HORIZON ENVIRONMENTAL INC.
