Heavy Equipment •Be aware of heavy equipment as it <br /> moves about the site. <br /> •As a bystander, stay away from all <br /> operating heavy equipment. <br /> Noise •Eardrum protection (plugs and/or <br /> muffs) located in the health and safety <br /> supplies, will be provided to, and worn <br /> by all workers exposed to noisy <br /> machinery. <br /> Fire/Explosion •Flammable liquids and fuels will be <br /> stored in appropriate containers away <br /> from tank removal activities. <br /> •No smoking or other ignition sources <br /> are allowed within 50 feet of the <br /> excavation, tank or stockpiled soil. <br /> •If necessary, vehicular traffic will <br /> be diverted per the guidelines in the <br /> LLNL Health and Safety Manual (M- <br /> 010), pp 11-5 to 11-6. <br /> •Workers will use non-sparking (Class <br /> 1 , Division 1) tools in the exclusion <br /> zone. <br /> •All heavy equipment will be grounded <br /> prior to operation. <br /> •Workers should avoid standing near <br /> the ends of the tank, since tank ends <br /> typically fly out away from tanks <br /> during tank explosions. <br /> •The oxygen level within the tank <br /> must be at or below 10% prior to tank <br /> removal from the excavation. <br /> •Organic vapors within the tank will <br /> be vented away from the work area and <br /> possible sources of ignition. <br /> Heat Stress •Rest periods <br /> •Shaded rest area <br /> -Mandatory breaks to replenish fluids. <br /> Burns from dry ice •Workers will wear leather gloves <br /> when handling dry ice. <br /> Site workers are expected to maintain the site in a condition that <br /> optimizes health and safety. For example, mitigating small spills <br /> with absorbent material, barricading excavations and picking up <br /> tripping hazards. <br /> D-9 <br />
