The LLNL site is secured from the surrounding vicinity with a fence
to eliminate accidental contact from the public. The excavation and
stockpiled soil will be secured with barricades and CAUTION tape
for the protection of LLNL personnel. Stockpiled soil will be stored
on and covered with polyethylene sheets to prevent any liquid runoff
from potentially contaminated soil during rainfall.
Equipment Failure
The SSO must be notified of any equipment failure and will
determine the effect of this failure on tank removal operations. If
the failure prevents the safe implementation of the closure plan, all
personnel will discontinue work and decontaminate themselves
while the situation is evaluated.
PERSONAL PROTECTION EQUIPMENT (PPE)
Level D
Work will be performed in Level D PPE unless unforeseen site
conditions warrant an upgrade of PPE. If an upgrade of PPE is
ordered by the SSO, this SHASP will be amended by the SSO to
address the additional health and safety concerns. Level D is the
lowest level of PPE and is suitable when respiratory protection is
not required and physical contact with chemical contaminants is
unlikely. Level D equipment consists of the following:
• Hard hat
• Safety goggles
• Work uniform (chemical-resistant suit is optional)
• Chemical-resistant or work gloves
• Chemical-resistant steel-toed boots
D-10
