1
1.4.1 General Concepts
1. Proper installation is the key to
achieving highly -reliable, adhe-
sive -bonded, matching taper, bell
and spigot joint.
2. Matching taper angles on spigot
and bell ends make it possible to
lock-up a joint by wedging the
spigot into the bell so that it takes
significant force to separate them.
Proper lock-up is essential.
3. A verythin line of adhesive (called
the bond I ine orglue line) between
the two matching tapered surfaces
is essential to achieve optimum
joint strength.
4. Cool weather installations require
different bonding procedures from
warm weather installations. See
Section 6.
5. Proper installation results in joint
MANOR#
A
!WOW, -
BELL X SPIGOT JOINTIT
Figure 1.4.1
strength equivalent to or stronger
than most piping systems.
6. To achieve the most reliable piping
system, it is essential that the in-
stallation crew be familiar with
the joining techniques described
in this manual. Note especially
Section 6.
7. Proper and safe methods of testing
are recommended to assure that
the bonded joints in the piping
system have been properly bonded
and cured. See Sections 6 and 7.
1.4.2 Bell and spigot joining method
The adhesive -bonded, tapered bell
and spigot joint is the primary joining
method for 2"-4" (50-100mm) pipe -
to -fittings.
The T.A.B. (threaded and bonded)
joint is the primary joining method
for pipe -to -couplings. The mechani-
.ddMMMP-iwrrH
cal locking action—when combined
with the adhesive—promotes positive
make-up of the joint and prevents
backout during adhesive curing.
Pipe is supplied with one end tapered
(the spigot) and the other end belled
(the integral bell or factory -bonded
coupling) to accept a tapered spigot.
Fittings are manufactured to accept
either the tapered spigot or T.A.B.
spigot end of the pipe. Tapers can be
made in the field with tools specially
designed for this purpose. (See Sec-
tion 5). Bells cannot be field -made.
When a belled end is needed, us a
bell x bell coupling.
Note: For pipe that is bundled in 15 -
ft. (5m) lengths, each bundle will
have an equal number of spigot x
spigot and bell x spigot pipe lengths.
l
T.A.B. JOINT
Figure 1.4.2
El
r" I
