Ll N:fIBERCLASS b- hq Nh� 1.5.1 Cutting To cut Smith Fiberglass Products' pipe, use one of the following: 1. Finetooth (32 teeth/inch) hack saw,or 2. Circular saw with a crushed tung- sten carbide or reinforced abrasive blade, or 3. Sabre saw with a fine-tooth metal or tungsten carbide grit blade, or 4. jigsaw with carbide grit abrasive blade (See Figure 1.5.1) Note: Cutting operations for • fiberglass pipe can generate dust or cutting chips that are irritating to the skin, upper respiratory tract, and eyes. Because these materials are irritating, good ventilation for the installation crew should be used to prevent exposure. A nuisance dust breathingfilter should be used when working in areas where wind and dust are present. Operators should wear heavy cotton clothing, including long -sleeve shirts, which protect the skin from the dust. Eye protection is required for the tool operator. 1.5.2 Tapering The matched taper concept employed by Smith Fiberglass Products is the key to excellent joint performance. A power tool (Model 2100) is available from Smith Fiberglass Products. It is preset at the factory and is capable of tapering 2" and 3" (50mm and 75 mm) diameter RED THREAD IIA pipe. (It also scarfs 3" and 4" (75mm and 100mm) diameter RED THREAD II A secondary containment pipe; see Part Two of this manual). Refer to Smith Fiberglass Products' Bulletin No. F6625 for operating instructions. If the power tool is not available, a manual tapering tool kit from Smith Fiberglass Products may be used. The tapering tools will reproduce a field -made taper to a± 1/8 inch (3mm) tolerance when compared to a fac- tory -made tapered spigot. The angle for properly made field tapers for 2"- 4" (50-100 mm) diameter pipe should be 1-3/4 degrees. NOTE: If the tapering tool has an old-style blade holder, it must be replaced. The correct taper angle is 1-3/4 degrees for 2", 3" and 4" pipe sizes. a� 32 Teem vw mcn &eoe 1 c B�eOe Fi ure 1.5.1 Thereareseveral power tapering tools not manufactured by Smith Fiber- glass Products which are available for use with Smith Fiberglass Prod- ucts' piping systems. It is the respon- sibility of the tool operator to ensure tha't the tool being used is capable of reproducinga field -made taperthat is within the tolerances of a factory - made tapered spigot. Refer to Smith Fiberglass Products' Bulletin No. F6600 for the correct procedures to verify matching tapered spigot toler- ances (factory -versus field -made).
