l v x+
stainless steel hand auger to at least 20 vertical inches below the
floor of the pits. At this point the two inch diameter stainless
steel sample driver was inserted to the bottom of the augered hole
and a driven sample collected. The size difference between the two
devices minimized cross contamination during sampling. All
sampling was done without entering the pit by using extensions of
the augering and sampling devices.
Samples S1, S2, and S8 were collected from soil stockpiles.
Samples S1 and S8 consisted of a composite of three individual
brass tubes of soil which were later combined in the laboratory for
analysis. To collect these composite samples, four to six inches
of soil was removed from the three locations on the stockpile and
a brass tube, already sealed at one end, was driven into and filled
with soil Sample S2 was collected by first removing approximately
six inches of earth from the surface, then driving in and filling
a brass tube (already sealed at one end) with soil.
After a soil sample had been collected, each brass tube of
relatively undisturbed soil was sealed with teflon lined plastic
end caps which were then secured with stretchable plastic tape.
The water sample was collected after purging the well for 145
rFr°4 minutes. The purge rate of the well could not be determined due to
E all piping being underground. water was collected from a sample
port directly into the appropriate sample container and immediately
scaled with teflon lined caps. All samples were labeled with
stick-on labels filled out in indelible ink, with the following
information:
Site name
)' Date collected
Time collected
Sample I.D.
Sampler's initials
Analysis required
Each sample was sealed in ziplock baggies and placed with ice in an
insulated chest for delivery with a Chain-of-Custody document to
the WESTON Analytics' laboratory in Stockton, California. This
laboratory is certified by the State of California to perform the
required analyses. Samples were submitted for analysis as
summarized in Table A-1.
All devices used to collect the drive samples (including the auger,
drive sampler, and stainless steel knife) were decontaminated prior
to first use and between uses for each sampling. These items were
decontaminated--by---washing---them An---an al conox-water--mixture--with
-T--stiff bristle brushes, rinsing with potable water, . and spray
rinsing with distilled water.
All on-site work was performed in accord with WESTON's site
specific health and safety plan. At no time did site personnel
f enter either of the pits. Sampling of the walls and floor of. the
Parte ti
is
