r
7
\ RECEIVED
THE ,) 0 CT 2 4 1990
SOUTHLAN D
CORPORATION ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH
October 22, 1990 PERMIT/SERVICES
San Joaquin County
Local Health District
C/o Ms. Laurie Cotulla
1601 E. Hazelton Ave.
Stockton, Ca 95201
Re: Southland property #20680
9110 Thornton Road in
Stockton, Ca
Dear Ms. Cotulla:
I am enclosing to you a report dated October 3, 1990 which
summarizes the operation of the vapor extraction soil
remediation system located at the above referenced site.
This report summarizes activities through September 30, 1990.
A letter from your office dated October 15, 1990 suggests
that Southland continue to operate the groundwater treatment
system as well as the vapor extraction system "until accept-
able groundwater quality is achieved." I would like to peti-
tion to the accomplishment of that very goal is at hand.
Ground water samples taken from the recovery well and the in-
fluent pipeline to the air stripper indicate that, drinking
water standards were exceeded once during the previous twelve
(12) months. This event occurred on January 25, 1990 when
1.0 parts per billion of benzene was detected. While some
monitoring wells onsite contain levels of gasoline con-
stituents above the state action standard, these constituents
do not seem to be making there way to the recovery well.
Because our water treatment system has over the past year
processed predominately clean water. And because vapor con-
centrations are rapidly diminishing as shown in the enclosed
report, Southland intends to discontinue remedial operations
at this location at the end of December 1990. It is our in-
tention to leave the existing water treatment system dormant
but in place with all permits kept current, while removing
all vapor extraction equipment located above ground. Activ-
ity on site would be reduced to quarterly ground water
monitoring for a time into the future which has yet to be de-
termined.
SOUTHLAND ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES/ LOCATION 2987
5820 STONERIDGE MALL ROAD/SUITE 310/P.O.
