Water from the
bailers was decanted into appropriate sample containers provided by the laboratory. The samples
were immediately placed in an ice-chest with .ice, along with a travel blank, and submitted under
chain-of-custody to a California-certified laboratory for.analysis.
All samples were analyzed for Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPHg) using Modified
EPA method 8015, 1,2-Dibromoethane (EDB) using EPA method 8240, Behene, Toluene,
Ethylbenzene, and Total Xylenes (BTEX), using EPA method 5020, and Total:Lead using method
7420174211239.2.
Observations
The two underground storage tanks were of steel construction and appeared to be in good
condition. No obvious odor-was noted as the USTs were pulled from the ground.- Petroleum
stains were observed in the southeast corner of the tank excavation. At the request of Mr.
Trevena, a sample (SW1) was obtained from the westerly sidewall of the excavation at a depth of .
approximately four feet.
The soils consisted primarily of medium brown, silty clays and sands. Water was initially
encountered in the excavation at a depth of approximately 10 feet and stabilized at a depth of
approximately 9 feet below grade. A petroleum hydrocarbon sheen was observed on the surface
of the water in the excavation at the time of sampling.
Findings
Analytical results for samples Tia and 72a obtained from beneath the westerly ends of each UST
revealed no detectable concentrations of TPH-gasoline or BTEX. Analytical.results for sample
Tlb and 72b, obtained from beneath the easterly end of each UST, revealed TPH-gasoline
concentrations of 510 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg, respectively. Analytical results for the samples
obtained.beneath the former dispensers revealed no detectable concentrations of TPH-gasoline and
N V
WALLACE-KUHL
&ASSOCIATES INC.
