15 October 2009
AGE-NC Project No. 98-0452
under ground storage tank(UST)as part of the LUST investigation.Well MW-4 was installed within
the water table to a depth of 25 feet below surface grade(bsg)with a screened interval between 5 feet
and 25 feet bsg.
Extracted ground water was stored in a 20,000-gallon Baker Tank(Figure 3) located immediately
west of well MW-4.A submersible pump was installed in the tank on 01 September 2009 to circulate
extracted ground water to prevent the tank drain from clogging with sediment and as a form of
mosquito control. The submersible pump was programmed to operate for one hour and to cycle off
for one hour. At the time of this letter, ground water is currently stored in the on-site Baker Tank,
with continued operation of the submersible pump within the tank.
DISCHARGE OF GROUND WATER TO SURFACE
The anticipated use of the stored ground water will be for dust control. As part of daily activities of
the Yamada Brothers'Farm, the dusting of gravel/dirt access roads occurs utilizing a water truck and
ground water extracted from irrigation wells. In efforts to the use the stored ground water, especially
during a drought year, the Yamada Brothers' Farm would like to utilize the ground water stored in
the Baker Tank for dusting of gravel/dirt access roads in lieu of pumping additional water from
existing agricultural wells. Access roads to be dusted are shown on Figure 2.
The Yamada Brothers propose to use a water truck with an approximate capacity of 1,500 gallons,
to spread the stored ground water on gravel access roads during a period of approximately 1 week
(typical use for the farm during the harvest season). The water truck utilizes sprayers at the rear of
the tank; sprayers are manually adjustable to varying spray patterns and volume of water released.
The sprayers will be adjusted to release the ground water in a fan pattern to insure coverage of the
gravel/dirt access roads while keeping the volume of water released at a level to prevent water
ran-off.
CHARACTERIZATION OF STORED GROUND WATER
Prior to initiating the ground water batch removal from well MW-4,the well was sampled utilizing
a disposable polyethylene bailer.Total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as gasoline(TPH-g)were
reported at a concentration of 2,200 micrograms per liter(µg/1),methyl-tert-butyl ether(MTBE)was
reported at a concentration of 7.4 µg/l, ethylbenzene was reported at a concentration of 17 µg11 and
total xylenes were reported at a concentration of 24.8µg/l.Total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified
as diesel (TPH-d) were not reported at or above detection limits.
After 24 hours and after approximately 1 week of pumping, ground water samples were collected
Advanced GeoEnvironmentaf,Inc
