PHS/EHD had requested that a work plan to define the vertical
and lateral extent of the documented petroleum hydrocarbon contamination at this site be
submitted by September 15, 2000.
A grab water sample collected at this site on January 28, 2000 had 110 parts per billion of
total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) as diesel upon analysis. While this concentration is
low, the CVRWQCB expressed concern that it may not be representative of total site
conditions. As groundwater gradient is unknown at this site, more than one water sample
should have been analyzed. In addition, a complete analysis of all potential petroleum
hydrocarbon constituents was not performed on the collected sample.
PHS/EHD and the CVRWQCB agree that further investigation of the groundwater
contamination at this site is warranted. Monitoring wells are not needed at this time.
Please submit a work plan to define the extent of the groundwater plume. Analysis of the
collected grab water samples should include TPH as gas and diesel by EPA Method
8015m; benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene by EPA Method 8020; and a full scan
EPA Method 8260 including all five oxygenates, ethanol, methanol, ethylene dibromide
and dichloroethane. Submit the work plan to PHS/EHD by October 20, 2000. If you have
any questions please call Lori Duncan at (209) 468-0337.
Donna Heran, REHS, Director
Environmental Health Division
Lo-LA Gt t2c tiAcm y.
Lori Duncan, Senior REHS Dot Lofstrom, RG
LOP/Site Mitigation Unit IV Engineering Geologist
cc: Marty Hartzell, CVRWQCB
John Lane, Ground Zero Analysis, Inc.
A Division of San Joaquin County Health Care Services
