Thorpe :
As per your request , I hzivc; rev:iewecl the proposed abandon-
ment of the three uiorii. tori.uy wolls and the methods proposed
to be used ,
It is my opinion that filling the intoriox• of tilt, 2 inch PVC
pipe and perforated liner with a cement-sand grout from the
bot:torn of the holes to the surface should constitute
sufficient protection of the ground water from possible
seepage and/or channeling_ of water from above . Sorne small
additional work might be appropriate as is suggested below
herein .
First , it should be remembered that the entire winery area
above the ground water table consists primarily of
permeable sands and silty sands with only an occasional
streak of less permeable clay . This means that water can
percolate from the surface dowiajard to tl'ie water table in
any area; therefore , cementing of the monitoring wells can !
accomplish only one thing , that is the prevention of
channeling along the well bores .
All three monitoring wells were grouted from the top of the
perforated interval to the surface by Groundwater Technology
Inc . when they originally installed the wells . The drilling
logs and complotion methods are attached . The cement grout
outside the 2 inch PVC pipe should constitute a good seal
around. the well bores . 'There r_ean never be a guarantee that a
seal exists, but when good engineering practices have been
followed and no reason exists to doubt same, a reasonable
conclusion is that the bore hole-pipe annulus has been
sealed and that a complete seal can be accomplished by
filling the pipe interior with grout .
The writer has inspected the 'bore hole condition of all
three wells while doing previous work.
At well. No , 1 , 1--he westerly location , flip Bement groat
sheath can be seen. This well was bent near the surface by
earth moving equipment and the upper foot or so of the grout
could be cracked ; therefore i4. is recommended that the well
head be dug out about two feet deep and that it be capped
with groat when the interior of the 2 inch pipe is being
plugged. .
