I
i07 March 2003
AGE-NC i Project No 95-0141
i attached to the hollow-stem rod assembly to total depth of each soil boring The soil parameters of
cone penetrometer hp resistance, sleeve friction and pore water pressure were continuous lymeasured
as the cone penetrometer was advanced to depth Continuous boring logs were generated utilizing
the Hogentogler Co CPT computer program The Hogentogler Co computer program utilized the
CPT Soil Behavior Classification System (Robertson, P K , Campanella, R G, Gillespie, D and
Greig, J , 1986) to generate a general lithology type and display on a CPT boring log (See
' Appendix B)
I2 12 Soil and Ground Water Sample Collection
Following advancement of the initial boring to collect lithologic data, the hydraulic ram was used
' to advance 2-inch diameter hollow-stem rods, fitted with either a HydroPunch ground water
sampling tool or a 1 25-inch diameter piston soil sampling assembly loaded with two pre-cleaved
brass sleeves, in an immediately adjacent, twin soil boring The tools were advanced to specified
depths to collect soil or grab ground water samples, based on the previously acquired CPT-lithology
data indicating favorable conditions for sampling
For the collection of a grab ground water sample, the HydroPunch sample tool was pushed into the
selected depth zone, then withdrawn approximately four feet to expose an inlet screen The interior
of the sampling tool filled with water and a '/z-inch outer diameter (0 D ) stainless steel bailer was
' utilized to extract a ground water sample Following sample collection, the samples were placed in
laboratory-supplied containers, properly labeled and placed in a chilled container
' For the collection of a soil sample the soil sampling assembly was pushed into the selected depth
zone, the penetration point was retracted and locked in the conng barrel, and the sampling assembly
was pushed an additional foot to collect the soil sample, only one soil sample was collected, from
' 85 feet bsg Upon soil sample retrieval, a selected brass sleeve was removed from the sampler The
ends of the brass sleeve were immediately covered with Teflon sheets, sealed with plastic end caps
and secured with tape Then the sample sleeve was properly labeled and placed in a chilled container
1
Following sample collection, each labeled sample was logged on a chain-of-custody form, placed
' in a chilled container and transported to McCampbell Analytical, Inc (MAI), a California
Department of Health Services (DHS)-certified laboratory for analysis for
' 0 Total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as gasoline(TPH-g)by EPA Method 5030/8015M,
Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX) by EPA Method 8260, and
' a Volatile organic compounds including methanol, ethanol, 1,2-dibromoethane(EDB),
1,2-dichloroethane(1,2-DCA), tertiary butanol (TBA),di-isopropyl ether(D1PE), ethyl tert
butyl ether (ETBE), tert amyl methyl ether (TAME), and MTBE by EPA Method 8260
Advanced GeoEnvironmentai,Inc
1
