Personnel working in the contaminated area shall use disposable protective clothing <br /> wherever possible. When leaving the work area, the worker will enter the decontamination <br /> zone. Any non-disposable clothing such as boots should be washed immediately. Wash <br /> water and material shall be retained for proper disposal. After washing, workers will <br /> remove disposable clothing and either store in the decontamination area for later use (if <br /> appropriate) or dispose of in containers provided for the purpose. No personnel shall <br /> enter the work area without first donning the appropriate protective clothing. <br /> Disposal of work-derived materials (expendables, decon waste, soil cuttings, <br /> groundwater, etc.): Contaminated or potentially contaminated material shall be stored on- <br /> site in DOT 17E/H drums or other appropriate containers. The material will be tested to <br /> - evaluate disposal options. <br /> 11.0 SAFETY PRACTICES <br /> In working with or around any hazardous or potentially hazardous substances or <br /> situations, site personnel should plan all activities before starting any task. Site personnel <br /> shall identify health and safety hazards involved with the work planned and consult with <br /> the PHSO or SSO as to how the task can be performed in the safest manner, if she/he <br /> has any uncertainties. <br /> The SSO shall conduct periodic safety briefings so that site personnel and contractors will <br /> understand procedures, and any questions personnel may have can be addressed. This <br /> procedure applies to additional subcontractor staff even if only working on-site for an <br /> hour. These briefings will be documented on a Project Health and Safety Sign-Off Sheet <br /> (attached). Adherence to the general safety rules listed below will be required. <br /> 11.1 General Safety Rules <br /> Wear protective equipment and clothing provided, when required. Wear thin rubber <br /> gloves under work gloves or thick work-rated rubber gloves. <br /> Wear a hard hat and safety glasses in all construction areas and during drilling activities. <br /> Wear sturdy work boots or shoes at the site. Steel-toed boots are required during drilling <br /> activities. <br /> y Do not eat, drink, or use tobacco in restricted work areas. <br /> . Prevent splashing of materials containing chemicals. <br /> Prevent back injury by never lifting or carrying a load that is heavier than you can <br /> comfortably handle. When lifting heavy objects, bend the knees and use the leg muscles. <br /> Keep all heat sources away from combustible liquids, gases, or any flammable material. <br /> When working in areas where combustible gases are present, use only intrinsically safe <br /> equipment (non-sparking). <br /> 8 <br />
