PHASE I ENVIRONMENTAL SrM ASSESSMENT AND SOIL SAMPLING REPORT
Lodi,California
Shell Purchase Order No.
Delta Project No.40-90-838
Page b
7
Soil samples were collected from depths of 5, 10,and 14 feet from each of the soil borings drilled. The soil
borings were drilled using a B-5,3 drilling rig with 7-inch outside-diameter hollow-stem augers. Soil samples
were obtained by driving a California-modified split-spoon sampler into the ground at specified depths.
Analysis of the blow counts and classification of the soil samples obtained indicate that the material
underlying the site is comprised of clayey silt and clay. Soil boring logs are presented in Appendix C.
5.3 Sample Collection and Chemical Anal
The soil samples were retained in 2.5=inch-diameter brass tubes 6 inches in length. Three brass tubes?were
inserted into the California split-spoon sampler. Upon retrieval of each soil sample, the bottom tube was
capped, sealed, labeled, and stored on ice for submittal to the laboratory. Soils from the middle tube.were
placed in jars and sealed with aluminum foil for later field screening. After the soils placed in the jars were
brought to ambient temperature, the vapors in the headspace of the jar were qualitatively measured for total
organic vapor content by use of an hNu photoionization detector (PID) .calibrated for benzene. Field
screening results are presented-in Table 1. Soils from the top tube were classified according to the Unified
Soil Classification System.
TABLE 1
"Field Screening Results (ppm)
Soil Sample Depth in Feet
Soil Boring 5 10 14
s13-1 4.0 0.6 0
SB-2 0 0 0
SB-3 0 0 0
4
Two soil samples were selected from each soil boring, one at 5 feet and one at 14 feet, for chemical analysis
to verify the presence or absence of fuel constituents. The soils submitted to the laboratory were analyzed
for the presence of gasoline constituents of BTEX and TPH by EPA Method 801518020. Results of this
chemical analysis are presented in Table 2. Laboratory data sheets ate presented in Appendix D.
