ANALYTICAL METHODOLOGY
Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH) Extractables GC/FID
EXTRACTION PROCEDURE:
WATER -
1 liter sample is poured into a 2 liter separatory funnel .
! 3x100 ml aliquots of methylene chloride (2 minute shake outs) i
are completed. The methylene chloride is decanted off and
concentrated to a 5 ml final volume.
i
SOIL -
30 grams of soil is mixed with 10 grams of washed sodium sulfate.
` 100 mis of methylene chloride is added to the soil and placed on
a mechanical shaker for 1 hour. The liquid is decanted off;
and the .process is repeated with an additional 50 ml of methylene
- chloride. The combined solvent extract is filtered throughl {
sodium sulfate and the extract is concentrated to a '5 ml
final volume. }
}
a
_ GC ANALYSIS -
3 ul' s of the sample extract is injected into a Varian 3400;1 GC
equipped with a Flame Ionization Detector, (FID) ', a , split/s'plitless
capillary injector operated in the splitless mode and a 30 ' eter,
0 . 25 mm ID, DB-5 capillary column temperature programmed
.from 40 to 280 deg C. The TPH fraction was quantitated as gasoline
and/or diesel standards based on relative retention -times against
a 3 point curve (gasoline standard points: 50, 290 , 500 ug/ml
and diesel standard points: 100 , 500, 2000 , ug/ml) . The TPH
fraction quantitation is based on chromatographic peak areas.
_ a
E
I
CHE MWEST ANALWICAL LABORATORIES.INC.
