Working To Restore Nature
1710 Main Street
Escalon, CA 95320
Phone: (209) 838-3507
FAX: (209) 838-3509
August 31, 1994
Ms. Mary Meays
San Joaquin County Public Health Services
Environmental Health Division
P.O. Box 2009
Stockton, CA 95201
Subject: McAllister Trust, 601 S. Ventura Street, Stockton, California
Ms. Meays:
This letter is submitted at the request of McAllister Trust in response to correspondence from
San Joaquin County Public Health Services, Environ ental Health Division (PHSIEHD) dated
July 27, 1994.
Destruction of Monitoring Well MW-1
During soil excavation activities performed in November 1993, monitoring well MW-1 was
destroyed due to caving of unstable sidewalls into the excavation. The upper 7-10 of the well
had been broken off into the excavation pit. Subseq ent shifting of soil within the excavation
pit effectively removed the remaining well casing above approximately 18 feet below grade.
Our files indicate that your office was notified prior o scheduling the pumping and disposal of
accumulated groundwater in the excavation pit. We apologize for any miscommunication. On
April 28, 1994, 54,076 gallons of groundwater were pumped from the excavation pit and
transported to the City of Stockton Wastewater Treatment Plant for disposal. After the level
of groundwater within the pit had been signifi tly lowered due to pumping, visual
identification of damaged monitoring well MW-1 could not be made by RESNA's Senior
Technician, Steve Jacques. The lack of visual evidence was confirmed by RESNA technician
Anthony Scoma, who was also on site, and by myself during a site inspection that afternoon. I
can assure you that no portion of the remaining well casing was visible. It stands to reason
that the well was still not visible on May 3, 1994 when a water sample was collected from
groundwater within the excavation pit after the water level within the pit had risen in response
to groundwater recharge.
150059\L-082294.FNL "
