Ventura
Stockton
Public Health Services, Environmental Health Division (PH /EHD) has reviewed the Problem Assessment
Report and the most recent Quarterly Report dated January 9, 1991 and has the following comments:
1. Benzene levels of 7.3 ppb and 4.6 ppb detected in MW-1 during the August and November
rounds of sampling respectively are of great concern. The hypotheses that the reduction
in benzene levels, between quarterly samplings, being as a result of natural biodegradation,
is interesting. PHS/EHD is concerned that a contaminates may instead be moving off-site
or retained in the soil as the depth to groundwater fluctuates.
2. In order to move quickly and better deterin a the groundwater conditions with respect to
the benzene levels, groundwater depths, d possible tidal influences on groundwater
gradient, PHS/EHD is requesting monthlymonitoring for a minimum of one quarter.
3. During the fact finding outlined above, HS/EHD also requests the preparation and
submission of alternatives for remediation ther than natural biodegradation.
If you have any questions, contact Steven Schneider, REHS, of my staff at (209)468-3441.
Jogi Khanna, M. ., M.P.H.
Health Offic
rie A.
