However, the opposite is true for salt, measured as
total dissolved solids (TDS). This constituent increases in value across the site, with approximately
1,200 mg/1 TDS in the upgradient wells and up to 3,000 mg/1 TDS in the downgradient wells.
Staff are concerned about the apparent effect site activities have had on the salt loading of the
groundwater. Therefore, by 15 August 1996, please submit a letter stating your perspective, with
supporting data, regarding .whether the salt increase is attributable to the feed product activities.
I am also in receipt of your letter requesting a relaxation of the monitoring schedule. Because the
groundwater gradient and monitored constituents have shown fairly consistent values, staff agree that
groundwater monitoring may change from a quarterly basis to a twice-yearly schedule. Please
conduct the groundwater monitoring during the months of March and September. The analytes are
to remain the same: nitrate, total Kjeldahl nitrogen, and total dissolved solids.
If you have any questions, I can be reached at (916) 255-3104.
WENDY WYELS
Ag Regulatory Unit
cc: Mr. John Rapp, Sierra Pacific Groundwater Consultants, El Dorado Hills
Mr. Jan Wagoner, Unocal, West Sacramento
Ms. Charlene Wall, Stockton Port District, Stockton
Mr. Jack Holm, Cargill, Stockton
Mr. Mike Infurna, San Joaquin County Environmental Health, Stockton
