Sierra-Pacific Groundwater Consultants, Inc.
HYDROGEOLOGISTS & GEOLOGISTS
v - v
February 7, 1994
Ms. Charlene Wall, Real Estate Division as
Port of Stockton
P.O. Box 2089 '
Stockton, California 95201
Subject. 2130 West Washington Street Environmental Work `n
Ground Water Monitoring Program
Sierra-Pacific Project No: 10-92-033
Dear Ms. Wall:
Sierra-Pacific Groundwater Consultants, Inc. (Sierra-Pacific), under contract with Unocal
Corporation (Unocal), has completed two phases of augering and soil sampling at the Cargill
Molasses Division (Cargill), formerly PM AG Products and PureGro Company, 2130 West
Washington Street molasses facility at the Port of Stockton. Two existing monitoring wells at the
site were decommissioned on 30 November 1993, and four new monitoring wells were installed on
21-22 December 1993. Water levels were measured four times in December, and one sampling
event was completed. Initial test results indicate that nitrate concentrations are present in shallow
ground water.
Water level measurements from the four new monitoring wells indicate that ground-water was
flowing northwest on 27 December 1993. By contract, water level data from the west Port of
Stockton area show ground water moving to the southeast. Furthermore, water level data from
wells located east of the Washington Street site are erratic. In short, existing data fails to explain
sporadic water level measurements near the Washington Street site. Sierra-Pacific is now
investigating several factors that may be influencing ground-water flow at Washington Street.
In pursuing one line of reasoning, Sierra-Pacific has observed that the Port of Stockton's office
complex is situated a few hundred yards northwest of the 2130 Washington Street site.
Furthermore, it is our understanding that non-potable well water is used to irrigate the Port's
landscaping. Non-potable water may also be used to wash trucks and trailers at the nearby vehicle
maintenance yard. Ground water appears to be flowing towards your office complex, so we have
the following questions:
1) Does the Port of Stockton have a water well near the office complex?
(916)933-1468
4911 Windplay Drive, Suite 4 EI Dorado Hills, California 95762 (916)933-3197 FAX
