Appendix C Maintenance BMPs <br /> o Use materials only where and when needed to complete the maintenance activity. Consider the use <br /> of C,21 Safer Alternative Products when possible. Reduce or eliminate use of hazardous materials on <br /> site when possible. <br /> o Dispose of any paint thinners, residue and sludge(s),that cannot be recycled, as hazardous waste. <br /> o For water-based paint, clean brushes to the extent practical, and rinse to a drain leading to a sanitary <br /> sewer where permitted, or into a concrete washout pit. For oil-based paints, clean brushes to the <br /> extent practical and filter and reuse thinners and solvents. <br /> o When loading and mixing pesticides,control water use to reduce potential for unpermitted non- <br /> stormwater discharges (e.g., provide a positive shutoff type of hose nozzle). <br /> Do not over-apply fertilizers and pesticides. Prepare only the amount needed.Strictly follow the <br /> recommended usage instructions.Apply surface dressings in smaller applications, as opposed to <br /> large applications,to allow time for It to work In and to avoid excess materials being carried off-site by <br /> runoff. <br /> o Avoid exposing applied materials to rainfall and runoff unless sufficient time bas been allowed for <br /> them to dry._Application of herbicides and pesticides shall be performed by a licensed applicator. <br /> o Keep a supply of spill cleanup material near material use areas.Train employees in spill cleanup <br /> procedures.
