0
Bechtel National, Inc.
Engineers-Constructors
tFifty Beale Street
San Francisco,California
MaIlAddress:PO Bax 3965.San Francisco,CA 94119
' October 4, 1985
1
' Mr. Marvin Palmer
American Forest Products Company
1 Stockton Division
1800 Marshall Avenue
Stockton, CA 95205
' Dear Marv:
The interim report provides as summary of the results of Bechtel
' National, Inc. 's (BNI)- Phase 1 site contamination investigation at the
Stockton Division facility of the American Forest Products Company
(AFPC) . This investigation was conducted by BNI at the request of AFPC to
' address concerns voiced by the California Department of Health Services
(DOHS) in an inspection report dated March 6, 1984.
DOHS is concerned that site contamination may have occurred in the truck
' parking/lumber storage areas and in areas around the maintenance shop
from previous operations at the facility. These include the storage of
batteries in the truck parking area and the disposal of waste oil and
' hydraulic oil in the maintenance shop ditch and along the facility's
western boundary fence.
' The primary contaminants of interest at this site are polychlorinated
biphenyls (PCB) and lead (Pb) . PCBs may be an ingredient in the hydraulic
oils used at the site. In addition, Pb may have leached from spilled
battery acid or leaking batteries. Analyses were also performed for
' pentachlorophenol (PCP) , tetrachlorophenol (TCP) , metals (arsenic-As,
Chromium-Cr, copper-Cu, mercury-Hg) , oil/grease and gasoline/diesel.
t In the truck parking area, PCBs were not detected and concentrations of
As, Cr, Cu, and Hg were consistent with background samples. Therefore, it
does not appear that contamination from these substances is present in
' the truck parking area. Pb concentrations were consistent with background
samples except at one location approximately 40 feet along the western
boundary fence from Yankee Stadium. Pb concentration at this location was
200 ppm. This elevated concentration could be the result of an isolated
1
