26 October 2000
AGE-NC Project No. 98-0466
Page 4 of 8
2.3. SOUTH BURN PIT AREA
The backfilled north and south burn pits were excavated under PHS-Esupervision in December
1992. The excavated soil is stockpiled north and east of the former bum pit areas and has been
undergoing sampling for characterization for disposal purposes. During a site visit with Mr. Robert
McClellon of the PHS-EHD, it was noticed that fill material was still in place on the south side of
the south bum pit, extending several tens of feet. The fill closely resembles the excavated fill
material and is suspected of being more of the same. To help estimate tt a volume of the remaining
fill and to characterize it,AGE proposes to drill two soil borings through lie fill;one near the former
burn pit,the other near the south margin of the fill material. Soil samples done grab groundwater
sample will be collected for laboratory analysis. Soil excavated from the urn pits has been impacted
by elevated concentrations of lead and dioxins.
3.0. SCOPE OF WORK
To fiuther assess the areas of potential concern, AGE proposes to:
• Advance two soil borings to groundwater(approximately 45 to 59 feet bsg)in the leach field
northeast of the Maintenance building and near the west ditch o collect soil and ground
water samples;
• Advance three soil borings to approximately 15 feet bsg betwe the former steam cleaning
area and the west ditch to collect soil samples;
• Advance two soil borings through the fill material south of the south burn pit,one boring will
be advanced to a depth of 35 to 40 feet bsg to collect a grab ground water sample, the other
to a depth of 20 feet bsg to assess fill thickness and underlying native soil;
• Collect shallow (0.5 foot bsg) soil samples in the former steam cleaning area to assess for
TPH-mo and metals contamination;
• Procure laboratory analysis of the ground water samples and selected soil samples; and
• Prepare a report of finding.
3.1. SOIL AND GROUND WATER INVESTIGATION
AGE proposes to meet assessment objectives by advancing soil borings to groundwater in the
Maintenance septic tank area, the western ditch/steam cleaning area, and near the south bum pit to
collect soil and ground water samples for laboratory analysis. Three shallow soil borings will be
advanced between the former steam cleaning area and the western ditch ea to collect soil samples
Advanced GeoEnviro=ental Inc.
