COLLECTION OF SOIL SAMPLES
To preserve soil samples for laboratory analysis and record field data:
• Utilize a 2.15-inch diameter soil sampling assembly loaded with four pre-cleaned 1.125-inch
by 6-inch brass sleeves to collect the samples; or
• Utilize a common hand auger assembly and metric drive sampler loaded with one 2-inch by
6-inch brass sleeve or two 2-inch by 3-inch brass sleeves;
• Obtain discrete soil samples at depths designated above.
• Upon retrieval of the soil sampler, preserve the soil sample in the second leading brass sleeve
(or only brass sleeve) by covering both ends with Teflon sheets and plastic end caps, and
scaling with tape.
• Label each preserved sample with location, boring designation, depth, date, time and
sampler's initials.
• Store the samples under ice pending transport under chain-of-cul tody in a chilled ice chest
to a DHS-certified laboratory for analysis.
• Screen soil sample duplicates for the presence of volatile organic'compounds using a photo-
ionization detector(PID)pre-calibrated to isobutylene.
• Visually describe soil sample duplicates in accordance with the Unified Soil Classification
System (USCS, as per Visual Classification of Soils, 1986, Bureau of Reclamation
Engineering and Research Center),'and record on field boring logs.
4.3. COLLECTION OF GRAB GROUND WATER SAMPLES
To collect and preserve ground water samples for laboratory analysis and to properly abandon
borings:
• Collect grab ground water samples from the deep soil probe borir g when the saturated zone
and total probing depth has been reached. Ground water samples will be collected using a
Geoprobe water sampling assembly.
• Ground water samples from the septic leach fields will be collected into six EPA-approved
Advanced GeoEnvironmental,Inc.
