29 January 2002
' AGE-NC Project No. 98-0466
' 2.0. PRIOR SITE ASSESSMENTS
' Several environmental concerns have been assessed at the site includrig the use and storage of
pentalchlorophenol, steam cleaning operations, active and in-active septic systems, several wash-
down areas, storm water retention ponds, a former teepee structure util zed for incinerating waste,
' two burn pits and stockpiled soil generated during excavation of the teepee structure and bum pits.
' 2.1. PENTACHLOROPHENOL
Pentachlorophenol was utilized on a periodic basis to treat wood upized for lumber storage
' purposes, but was not part of the normal industrial process. A con to tank (UST 18820010)
extending approximately 10 feet into the subsurface south of the R# Bond area of the Finger
Joints/Box Factory Building was utilized to treat the wood `stickers'. Treated wood, possibly some
' PCP, and lead batteries were stored west of the Finger Joints/Box Factory Building in the truck
parking area shown on Figure 3.
2.1.1. Parking Area
' BNI collected soil samples from the parking lot area in 1985. One shallov soil sample (0.5 to 1 foot
bsg) contained 33 mg/kg PCP. Meinfelder collected additional shallow s it samples from 8 shallow
.pits in the area on 15 September 1987. PCP was detected in only one of tight samples analyzed and
' was detected at a concentration of 430 micrograms per kilogram(µg/kg). One sample analyzed for
dioxin/furan isomers did not contain detectable concentrations ofthe co ounds.Lead was detected
at 200 mg/kg in one sample, the concentrations were reported to be within background levels for the
remaining samples. A table of analytical data and a sampling map taken fiom Kleinfelder's Soil and
Ground Water Assessment,American Moulding&Millwork dated 04 No rember 1987 was included
' in AGE's Site Environmental History report, dated 04 May 2001.
' 2.1.2. "Penta Tank"
Kleinfelder proposed in the June 1987 work plan to place a boring near a penta tank and collect
' soil samples at 5, 10, 15 and 20 feet bsg to analyze for PCP and trichlorop enol(TCP). Kleinfelder's
1992 Phase III report recounted that the samples collected in the boring, in 1987 did not contain
detectable concentrations of PCP or TCP. AGE does not have a copy of the primary report of the
' investigation. Figure 3 shows the approximate location of the former p to tank; the Bleinfelder
boring locations are not known by AGE, but may be represented on tie sampling location map
partially dated"June 9" included in Appendix C ofAGE's Site Environm ntal History report, dated
Advanced CioEnvironm vial,Inc.
1
