x • •
MARLEY COOLING TOWER COMPANY " --s
STOCKTON, CALIFORNIA FACILITY NOV Z 7 1989
ENVIRONMENTAL PFAI 9i
SOUTH YARD STORM WATER SAMPLING
SCOPE OF WORK
1.0 INTRODUCTION
South Yard cleanup efforts have been beneficial and effective in reducing
chromium, copper, and arsenic contamination of storm water runoff from
Marley Cooling Tower Company's (MCTC's) South Yard. The reduction of
contaminant concentrations is evidenced by previous sampling activities
as discussed in Section 3.3.3 of Volume I of MCTC's Remedial
Investigation/Feasibility Study (RI/FS) . However, the RI/FS also indicated
that previous South Yard storm water runoff has contaminated offsite ditch
soils in some areas (Volume I, Section 6.1) . The RI/FS identified the
South Yard storm water runoff and any sediment deposits within the South
Yard drainage pipes as the only potential remaining sources of additional
soil contamination.
Volume II of the RI/FS evaluated and recommended surface soil and South
Yard drainage pipe remediation efforts. The recommended remedial actions
included ditch soil removal from contaminated areas and sediment sampling
of South Yard drainage pipes. The sediment sampling results would be used
to plan appropriate drainage pipe cleaning efforts which would mitigate
additional soil contamination.
This proposed sampling plan is designed to confirm or discount the South
Yard storm water runoff as a source of additional soil contamination. The
storm water sampling will be conducted in a manner which indicates storm
water runoff quality prior to interfences by drainage pipe sediments or the
existing ditch soils . As sampling contractor, Slack & Veatch personnel
will conduct storm water sampling in accordance with this scope of work.
1
