INTERIM SOIL AND GROUNDWATER
CORRECTIVE ACTION SUMMARY REPORT
8960 W. Walnut Grove Rd
Thornton, California
1.0 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
This report is submitted by Ground Zero Analysis, Inc (Ground Zero) on behalf of Barnyard
Corporation to summarize interim corrective action conducted at the subject site The site
formerly operated as a convenience store and retail gasoline station and utilized three 10,000-
gallon underground storage tanks(USTs) to store diesel and gasoline fuel
A limited subsurface assessment conducted in December 1996 determined that petroleum
hydrocarbons had impacted soil and groundwater beneath the site The USTs and associated piping
were removed under permit from San Joaquin County Public Health Services, Environmental Health
Division (PHS/EHD) in January 1999 A follow up subsurface investigation conducted in July 1999
essentially delineated the extent of soil and groundwater contamination resulting from fuel
released from the former USTs Based on the results of the investigation, source removal
excavation and supplemental groundwater removal and disposal were proposed in the Interim
Corrective Action Workplan and Addendum dated February 15, 2000 and March 14, 2000
Approximately 3,700 cubic yards of soil was excavated from the area immediately surrounding
the former USTs The excavation proceeded to a depth of approximately 15 feet bgs where
subjective analysis and field FID readings suggested the vertical extent of contamination had been
reached Confirmation soil samples collected from the sidewalls and floor of the excavation
confirmed that virtually all contaminated soil has been excavated Approximately 60,000 gallons
of contaminated groundwater was pumped from the excavation and transported to the
Sacramento County Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant for disposal under a temporary
discharge permit Analytical results from groundwater samples collected from the excavation
indicated that petroleum hydrocarbon constituents were significantly reduced by interim remedial
measures conducted at the site
Pursuant to a directive by PHS/EHD dated February 16, 2000, Ground Zero recommends installing
and sampling four groundwater monitoring wells to confirm the efficacy of interim corrective action
G 1Dala1GROUNDZEIMANSER\Rq,,,Mlso lexsum doe
