It was a pleasure to meet you. The highlights
of our discussion are as follows:
• The property that you own includes 290 feet of frontage along Washington Boulevard and
extends 363 feet south towards Sonora Avenue. The seasonally ponded area where MW-6
was located is not on your property, and the eastern portion of the former Cal Farm Supply
property containing MW-8 belongs to another property owner as well.
• The primary groundwater contaminant is nitrate. The maximum concentration appears under
the seasonal ponded area south of the facility, on the north side of Sonora Avenue. The
pesticides benzene hexachloride (lindane) and dinoseb were detected regularly in MW-3, but
not in the other monitoring wells. You noted that MW-3 was just outside the back entrance to
the warehouse (this entrance has been removed). Board staff files show that in the early 1990s
soil in this area was remediated to staff satisfaction.
• Revised Monitoring and Reporting Program No. 97-812 (MRP) requires two sampling events
per year. Pending review of the results of the next sampling round, it may be appropriate to
revise the MRP to reduce the frequency and scope of monitoring requirements. You agreed to
sample all the monitoring wells as required by the MRP this fall, noting that it is difficult to
sample during the spring season, since this area often becomes inundated with water.
• You reported that you planted safflower in the southern portion of your property for the
purpose of consuming nitrogen from the shallow groundwater. You also offered to plant a
row of trees along the downgradient (eastern) boundary and along the western property
boundary(adjacent to MW-3). We concur that phytoremediation with crops and/or trees are
California Environmental Protection Agency
Qd Recycled Paper
The energy challenge facing California is real.
