Valley. This large northwest-southeast
trending valley is a sedimentary basin containing several thousand feet of late Tertiary and
Quaternary sediments and is part of what is called the Great Valley: The basin is bordered by
the Franciscan age rocks of the Coastal Ranges and the Sierra Nevada Range on the west and
east, respectively. The primary geologica! component.of the Sierra Nevada Range is granite.
Between the Coastal Ranges and the Tertiary and Quaternary sediments on the :vest side of the. j
valley are the folded Great Dalley Sequence comprised mainly of Cretaceous age sandsrones.
The Southern Sierra Nevada Range hooks westward to border the southern extremity of the
Great Valley and the Klamath Mountains provide the northern boundary. The Klarnath
Mountains are thought to have been part of the Sierra Nevada Range in h?esozoic time and
later separated through orogenic and plate tectonic forces.
f
_—_The-Great_Valley-,was-originally-an-oceanic-trough_zone—Even though thick-sediments_now _ _ —
14
