The diesel UST was installed in 1978 and the gasoline UST was
installed in 1937. The site conditions at the time of USTEC's investigation including the location
of the building, the former UM, product delivery piping, vent piping, and fuel dispensers are
presented in Figure 2-
3.0
3.0 UNDERGROUND STORAGE TANK REMOVAL OBSERVATIONS
The excavation and removal of the 10,000-gallon and 1,000-gallon USPS, fuel dispensers, product
delivery and vent pipes was completed by Crisp Construction of.Visalia, California, on April
19,1990. All work was completed under the supervision of Quinn and Quinn Enterprises, Inc.,
also of Visalia, California.
The UST excavation sites were covered with approximately 6 inches of concrete. During
excavation, sand fill was encountered around both USTs, extending to a depth of about 6 feet
at the 1,000-gallon UST location and to a depth of about 10 feet at the 10,000-gallon UST
location. The native soils beneath the fill consisted of red clay to the full depth of excavation.
The excavations for the 1,000-gallon and the 10,000-gallon USTs are shown in Photograph Nos.
1 and 2, respectively.
The product delivery pipe and vent pipe were disconnected and removed after exposing the
USPS. The product delivery lines consisted of a 10-foot long, 2-Inch galvanized pipe for the
1,000-gallon tank and a 15-foot long, 2-inch galvanized pipe for the 10,000-gallon tank. All
Y lines were visually inspected upon removal for areas of obvious corrosion. "The Hhes:were
fund M" ' relatively good condition with only minor oxidation observed (Photograph N.,s.3 and
4). Following disconnection of the product and vent lines, each tank was triple rinsed using tap
water and a high pressure washer. The rinsate was removed from the USTs by Refineries
Service Inc., of Patterson, California for recycling. The rinsate manifests are included in
Appendix A.
2
