1
Human Health Screening Evaluation
US Can—Welty Road March 19,2012
Inhalation Non-Cancer Hazard for Air(PEA Guidance Manual, Figure 2.4):
Hazard.;,_(Ca/RfDi) x 0.639
Where:
Hazardair=inhalation non-cancer hazard from indirect soil exposure
RfDi =the inhalation reference dose, mg/kg-day
Ca=concentration in air, mg/m3
Section 3.4.3 describes how SAIC estimated Ca using equations presented in PEA Guidance
Manual Figures 2.5, 2.6, and 2.7 for VOCs, and Figure 2.8 for non-VOCs.
The inhalation hazard calculations for potential exposure to on-site soils are provided in
Table 15. Potential hazards were estimated for PAH COPCs and then summed among chemicals
for inhalation exposures.
SAIC then summed the health hazards for oral and dermal exposures (Table 14)with the hazards
for inhalation exposures (Table 15)to estimate the hazards across exposure routes for on-site I
soils. The sum of oral, dermal, and inhalation non-cancer hazards for on-site soils is provided in
Table 16.
3.4.3 Air Concentrations of Organic Compounds from Soils I
SAIC also calculated the estimated air concentrations of non-VOCs (as wind-blown, suspended-
soil particulates) and VOCs (following volatilization into ambient air)using equations presented
in the PEA Guidance Manual. These equations are shown in the following sections. I
Air Concentrations of Non-VOCs from Soil
SAIC used the estimated ambient-air concentration of non-VOCs as wind-blown, suspended soil
particulates to estimate inhalation exposures, and subsequently inhalation risks and hazards from
those chemicals. The air concentration of non-VOCs in ambient air was calculated using the
following equation(PEA Guidance Manual, Figure 2.8):
Ca=Cs x(5E-08 kg/m3)
Where:
Ca=concentration in air, mg/m3
Cs=concentration in soil, mg/kg
The air concentrations of the following non-volatile PAHs were estimated using this equation
(Table 17):
• Benzo(a)anthracene
• Benzo(a)pyrene
• Benzo(b)fluoranthene
• Benzo(g,h,i)perylene
• Benzo(k)fluoranthene
• Chrysene
• Dibenzo(a,h)anthracene
8 '
SAIE
