October 16, 1995 UEC Document No.: R -1669510A
UEC Job No.: 165040-9510C
3.2.2 Work Area Airborne Fiber Concentration Timeline
Exposure air samples will be collected to ensure that the abatement crew is not being exposed to levels of
airborne fiber concentrations in excess of the PEL and /or excursion limit. The analytical data collected
throughout the course of this project will be used to assemble a work area airborne fiber concentration
timeline, thereby providing a graphical, non -formal correlation between observed airborne fiber
concentrations and work crew activity. UEC proposes to collect a minimum of four (4) exposure air
samples per work shift. However, the number of exposure air samples will depend on the number of
members in the abatement crew and the number of different activities in which they are engaged.
4.0 SOIL SAMPLE COLLECTION SCHEME
The UEC staff has determined that both baseline and final clearance samples shall be collected at the
locations indicated in Figure 2 and as specified in the Sections 4.2 and 4.3 of this report; a UEC CAC will
be on site to conduct the collection of the appropriate number of bulk soil samples. As recommended by
the EPA, the laboratory analysis of the soil samples collected will be performed by a laboratory that is
accredited by the National Institute of Standards and Technology under the National Voluntary Laboratory
Accreditation Program (NVLAP) for Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM) with dispersion staining. The
results of the PLM analyses performed on the baseline sample set will be available within five (5) working
days from the time of collection. The results of the PLM analyses performed on the final clearance sample
set will be available within two (2) to three (3) working days from the time of collection.
4.1 Soil Sample Collection Protocol
Near -surface soil samples (up to 14 inches below surface level) will be obtained by driving a modified
Shelby Tube sampler, containing a single 6 -inch by 2.5 -inch diameter brass sleeve, with a weighted
sliding hammer. Soil sample collection will encompass the following:
a. All sampling equipment will be washed with a trisodium phosphate (TSP) detergent solution,
rinsed with tap water and deionized water, then allowed to air dry prior to use and between
sampling intervals to minimize the possibility of cross contamination.
b. Upon removal of the brass sleeve from the Shelby Tube sampler, a sufficient amount of sample (i.
e., soil) will be deposited into a plastic bag, labeled, and stored in a rigid container, suitable for
transporting the samples to an appropriately certified laboratory (as indicated in Section 4.0) for
analysis.
C. All sample labels will identify the job number, sampler name, date and time of sample collection,
and a sample number unique to the sample.
9
