60
HILLSIDE INSTALLA*
Tanks may be installed on moderately sloping terrain
provided the slope does not exceed 10 degrees. The
downhill side must consist of native soil. Fill dirt is not
permitted on this side to alter the grade of the slope.
The top of the tank must be below the surface of the
downhill side, and must be covered by material with
depths as stated in item 4.
DRY HOLE INSTALLATION
he bed must be smooth and level, and must contain a
minimum of 12 inches (30cm) of smooth and level pea
,_:ravel or stone crushings. (See ®) Place the tank or
-.=inks on the bed carefully. Do not install Xerxes
: antury-Cast Tanks directly on a concrete slab, or grout
tanks in wet concrete. Also, do not install these tanks
on timbers, beams, cradles or directly on the hole bottom.
After the tank is bedded, and prior to backfilling, it must
oe leveled. For longitudinal leveling, place the level across
e tank ribs at the top surface. Lateral leveling is ac-
complished by placing the level across the top of the
'.ank outlet or manway.
.ackfill uniformly with the same material used for bed -
In freezing conditions make sure the material is
ury and free of ice and snow. First, place a 12 inch (30cm)
i.i, of backfill evenly around the tank. Work the material
completely beneath the tank body and endcaps by hand
in order to provide full support. A board or tamping bar
rs''-ould be used to
farce the material in WRONG
;dace. After the first
*ib'-24 inches (45- MVb °
vOcm) of backfill is
in place, use the '
aping bar to work = _
Me backfill into the -
voids under the
edges of the tank RIGHT
and ribs and around °
tine endcaps. Re-
t?winder of backfill x
can now be done
thout further hand—
srk.
After backfill is brought to top of tank, it is recommended
that water or product be added as ballast until piping
and final backfilling to grade is accomplished. When fill-
ing with ballast or product, make sure the tank is ade-
quately vented.
CAUTION—Do not ballast tank with water or product
until backfill is even with top of tank (except as noted in
wet hole procedure).
The same material as specified in Item 3 must be used
to completely fill excavation. The backfill must be free
of debris. Any blocks or bricks used as support material
during piping must be removed prior to completion of
backfilling. Safety measures, such as placing barri-
cades until installation is complete, should be used
around the excavation site.
NOTE: If there is any reason to believe that water might enter the hole
after installation, or if hole is in clay soil with poor drainage, anchoring
is required.
OWET HOLE INSTALLATION
Pump the water from the hole to maintain minimum wa-
ter level. Add a minimum of 12 inches (30 cm) of backfill
material to the hole, and level the bed to assure com-
plete bottom support for the tank. Position the tank in
the hole. The 24 inch (60 cm) spacing between tank and
side wall must be maintained as a minimum in a wet
hole installation.
Partially fill the tank with water until it settles firmly on
the prepared bed. Ballast level in a tank must never
exceed water level in hole during installation. Use only
enough water to ballast the tank until backfill material is
even with the top of the tank.
After leveling tanks,
the anchoring proce-
dures in Item 9 must
be followed. 6 4;1
Backfill must be added
evenly after anchor-
ing, and remaining dry
hole backfilling pro-
cedures should be
followed as stated in
Item 7.
NOTE: Cover depth must meet minimum depth specified in Item 4 of
these installation instructions.
NOTE: It is recommended the tank be ballasted with water or product
once backfill is even with the top of the tank.
