61
tank T-4, the soil was a reddish brown sandy clay from which a slight gasoline odor was
noted. In sampling location T4-2 from beneath former tank T-4 the soil was a reddish
brown to an olive green sandy clay from which a gasoline/diesel odor was noted.
Observations of the bottom of the excavation indicated that this discolored soil was
limited to an area one to two feet deep and two to three feet across.
In addition, at the request of the SJCPHS soil samples were obtained from beneath the
three former product dispensers (identified as D-1 through D-3) and the product supply
line trench (identified as PL -1) (see Figure 2). At a depth of approximately three feet
the soil was noted to change from a dark brown sandy clay to a reddish brown sandy
clay to clayey sand. This reddish brown soil was believed to represent the native soil
and at the request of the SJCPHS samples were obtained from the top of this reddish
brown soil. Sampling at these locations was performed by using a backhoe to
excavate to the proper depth and then bringing up a volume of relatively undisturbed
soil for examination and sampling.
Product dispenser D-1 was located on the southeast end of the pump island (farthest
from the excavation) and the sample from this location was identified as D-1. Product
dispenser D-2 was located in the center of the pump island and the sample from this
location was identified as D-2. Product dispenser D-3 was located on the northwest
end of the pump island (nearest the excavation) and the sample from this location was
identified as D-3. A sample was also obtained from the center of the product supply
line trench adjacent to dispenser D-2 and was identified as sample PL -1.
The soil from beneath former fuel dispensers D-1, D-2 and D-3 was a reddish brown
sandy clay to clayey sand. At sample location D-1 a slight gasoline/diesel odor was
noted, at location D-2 a gasoline/diesel odor was noted, and at location D-3 no
=J1
MMw:\24.2G1%USTAPT 126 -OCT -981
