When the weather is cool (70° F or below), pre -warm the adhesive
kits. (Warm to the touch is sufficient.)
2. ';Empty the hardener can into the can of adhesive.
3.', Mix all the adhesive with all of the hardener during the mixing
process.
4. Wipe down the sides, bottom and under the rim of the can with the
mixing stick.
5. i', Mix until the adhesive has a smooth flow off the mixing stick.
Joint cleaning.
NOTE: Solvent containers may be under pressure. Use caution when
removing the inner seals. Eye protection is recommended.
1.;', Use sufficient cleaner and clean paper towels.
2. j Clean all of the T.A. B." (Threaded and Bonded) ortapered surfaces,
both bell and spigot.
3. Remove oil, grease, mud, fingerprints, etc.
4.I'' Once cleaned, do not touch the bonding surfaces.
T.A.B. joint make-up.
1.iMeasure the length of the threads in the bell.
2. On the spigot, make a mark Y4" longer than the bell thread mea-
surement.
3. Prewarm the surfaces at temperatures below 70° F. Use a propane
?'torch with flame spreader tip, electric heating collar or other handy
heat source. Surfaces should be warm to the touch. Do not touch
tapered surfaces to check (i.e., touch outside of bell or inside of
spigot.)
4.! Cover all machined areas on the spigot and at least %z" beyond the
last thread in the bell with the adhesive.
5. Screw the pipe together by hand ensuring that you do not have the
joint cross threaded. With 2" diameter RED TH READ I I pipe you can
tighten it with your hands until the mark on the spigot is no longer
i' visible. On 3" and 4" RED THREAD 11 pipe use the T.A.B. wrenches
to screw the pipe together until the mark on the spigot is no longer
visible. Spigots must insert at least Y4" past the threaded portion of
the bell.
6.1i Check lock-up by moving free end of pipe in an up and down or side
to side motion. No movement should be visible in the joint. If any
movement exists, continue to tighten until no movement is visible.
Connections into fittings are made using the normal bell and spigot
methods. (111 C)
Organize the crew for maximum efficiency.
The man doing the cleaning should stay one joint ahead of the assembly
crew and raise the free end of the pipe for good alignment.
Organize the crew so that the adhesive is spread on the bonding surface
as quickly as possible — particularly in extremely hot weather.
Plan adhesive kit usage so that the crew won't have to wait while one
man goes to get another kit.
Plan ahead so that a sufficient number of bonds are available to use up
one whole kit to avoid waste.
