2. Slit this "patch" lengthwise twice and remove a section so that �^ <br />about three-fourths of the circumference is left. <br />3. Thoroughly sand the inner surfaces of this patch, and sand a cor- <br />responding area on the pipe around the damaged section. Use SQUEEZE PATCH <br />coarse sandpaper or a bastard file to remove all the gloss from the IN PLACE WITH <br />bonding surfaces. CLAMP <br />4. Clean both surfaces with solvent from an adhesive kit;, apply ad- "'""�— =�-- <br />hesive to both surfaces; snap the patch in place; then squeeze with - <br />hose clamps, a repair clamp, or stainless steel banding until the _ <br />adhesive hardens. The clamping device may be left on or removed, _ <br />depending on its salvage value. <br />C. Repair on extensive damage. <br />1. Extensive damage can be defined as damage too long tojpatch or <br />damage all around the circumference, which cannot bepatched. <br />2. If the damage is local, but all the way around, proceed as' follows: CUT OUT DAMAGED SECTION <br />a. Check to see if there is sufficient slack in the pipe so, that the TAPER CUT ENDS <br />damaged section can be cut out, cut ends tapered, and a sleeve <br />coupling bonded between the tapered ends. <br />3. If the damaged section is extensive, too large for 2. a. above, or too . •, ••-- ^, <br />large to patch, proceed as follows: <br />a. Cut out the damaged section. <br />b. Taper the cut ends. FIT NIPPLE WITH <br />c. Fit a nipple with sleeve couplings on each end so that it is SLEEVE COUPLINGS <br />slightly longer than actually required to fill the gap. <br />d. Clean all four bonding surfaces, apply adhesive to all surfaces, �,�, •Lf;= <br />and insert the repair section into the line, making certain that all <br />tapers are tightly locked. <br />VII. Adhesives. - <br />A. Working life or pot life is the time it takes for the adhesive to' harden in <br />the mixing can. This is usually measured from the time the hardener <br />and adhesive are first mixed. It is shorter at temperatures above 700 F <br />and becomes longer as temperature drops below 70° F. <br />1. Working life is affected by the quantity of adhesive as well as <br />temperature. <br />a. Working life in hot weather can be extended by keeping the can <br />cool. <br />1) Make a cooler by wrapping the can with rags or paper towels, <br />then keep the wrappings wet with water or better yet, some <br />solvent. <br />2) Cut off the bottom two inches of the carton in which the <br />adhesive kit is furnished. Line the inside with rags or paper <br />towels and wet tfie rags or towels with solvent, then set the <br />adhesive can in the"nest". Do not get any of the solvent into <br />the adhesive can. If this occurs, do not use the adhesive. <br />b. Working life in hot weather can also be extended by spreading <br />the adhesive out into a film. Pourthe adhesive mix out'of the can <br />and spread it out on a clean piece of tin or foil. <br />B. Curing time is the time required forthe adhesive in the assembled joint <br />to harden. External heat is recommended for cure when, ambient <br />temperature is below 70° F. <br />1. Use a Smith Fiberglass Products Inc. electric curing collar. il Referto <br />Smith Fiberglass Installation Instruction Manual No. 9474, page 12.) <br />2. Preheating the bonding surfaces and pre -warming the adhesive will <br />speed up the cure in moderately cool weather. <br />i <br />C. The Smith Fiberglass Adhesive Kits for UL pipe, DS -7014 and DS -7024, <br />have a 25 minute working life at 75° F. The recommendation's on their <br />usage are described in the Smith Fiberglass product literature for <br />underground handling of liquid petroleum fuels and in the instruction <br />procedures sheet enclosed in every DS -7014 and DS -7024; adhesive <br />kit. <br />This literature is found in the Smith Fiberglass product catalog or can <br />be obtained by contacting the Smith Fiberglass representative in your <br />area or writing to Smith Fiberglass Products Inc., Little Rock, Arkansas. <br />(Read the instruction sheets enclosed in every adhesive kit.) <br />INSERT REPAIR SECTION <br />INTO LINE, TIGHTLY LOCK <br />ALL TAPERS <br />ADHESIVE CURE <br />so ,.
