Ms. Kaley Foley
S E C O R AWL
January 30, 2003
Page_2
Soil Sampling
Soil samples will be collected beneath the dispensers and product piping at the direction of the SJCEHD
inspector. Soil samples will be collected by a SECOR representative using a shovel, hand auger, impact sampler
and/or via Geoprobe rig. Soil samples will be immediately sealed in clean 2-inch by 6-inch brass sleeves using
Teflon® sheets and plastic end caps. Each sleeve will be filled completely with soil to minimize headspace,
labeled and then placed in a cooler on ice for transport to Kiff Analytical, Inc., a State-certified laboratory. Chain-
of-custody procedures will be followed at all times.
In the event that other means of sample collection are not feasible, a Geoprobe rig will be used to collect soil
samples underlying the dispensers. A truck-mounted direct-push rig utilizing a 2-inch diameter by 10-inch long
sample barrel containing a 1.75-inch diameter brass sleeve will be used to collect soil samples. Each soil boring
will have a 6-inch long section removed for laboratory analysis. Soil samples will be sealed using Teflon®sheets
and plastic end caps. The depth of the boring will be determined by the SJCEHD representative during scii
collection activities.
During soil sampling activities, SECOR will monitor air space with olfactory observations and by monitoring with a
photoionization detector (PID). All soil sampling equipment will be cleaned with a non-phosphate detergent
solution and rinsed to reduce the possibility of cross-contamination between sample locations.
Laboratory Analyses
Soil samples designated for chemical analysis will be delivered under chain-of-custody to Kiff Analytical, Inc., a
California state-certified laboratory located in Davis, California. The samples will be analyzed for total petroleum
hydrocarbons characterized as gasoline (TPHg), benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, total xylenes (BTEX), methyl-t-
butyl ether (MTBE), ethyl tertiary butyl ether (ETBE), di-isopropyl ether (DIPE), tertiary amyl methyl ether (TAME),
and tertiary butanol (TBA) by Environmental Protection Agency(EPA) Method 82608.
Waste Management
Any soil waste generated during line upgrade and sump installation activities will be placed on and covered with
plastic sheeting (visqueen). Four soil samples will be collected from the stockpile in brass sleeves using Teflon®
sheets and plastic end caps. These soil samples will be labeled and placed in a cooler on ice for transport to Kiff
Analytical Inc. The laboratory will combine the four soil samples into one composite sample to analyze for
concentrations of: TPHg, BTEX, and MTBE by EPA Method 8260B and total lead by EPA Method 200.8. Chain-
of-custody procedures will be followed at all times.
Upon analysis of stockpile samples, Tim A. Manley Trucking will transport the hydrocarbon-impacted soil to a
state certified landfill.
Report Preparation
A report of the soil sample activities and results will be prepared and submitted to SJCEHD. The report will be
reviewed and signed by a Registered Geologist.
If you have any questions regarding this work plan, please contact our office at your convenience.
SECOR International Incorporated
Jaff Auchterlonie hn . Bower, R.G.
Senior Geologist Principal Geologist
Enclosure:
cc: 7-Eleven c/o
Mr.John Wainwright, SECOR
