900003OAll CON-15
2.3 SUSPECTED SITE CONTAMINATION
Suspected contamination locations at the site identified by HLA on
October 18, 1988 were inspected by WCC on January 15, 1990 as part of the
current investigation. The results are summarized in Table 2-2.
Discolored concrete and gravel were observed in the waste oil drum
storage area, near the equipment maintenance and repair shop. The affected
area was about 10 square feet (ft2) . The discoloration probably resulted
from spillage of waste oil from the drums.
A number of relatively small discolorations were observed throughout
the site, particularly in the southern portion of the site where equipment
is stored. The discolorations were typically less than 5 ft2 in area. The
discolorations may be attributable to leakage of pesticides, fertilizers,
or waste oils from the stored equipment.
Black discoloration of soils in the vicinity of the Volck Supreme Oil
storage tanks was observed. The affected area was about 100 ft2. The
discoloration may be attributable to leakage of Supreme Oil from the tanks.
HLA noted that the sludge in the stormwater collection pond may contain
hazardous wastes. As discussed in Section 2.1, samples of the sludge were
tested and the sludge was disposed of in the Kettleman Hills Class I
landfill .
During HLA's site inspection, soils near the 365,000-gallon tank (which
contained the fertilizer 10-34-0) were wet and saturated with fertilizers
from a leak which occurred in October 1988. At the time of the WCC site
inspection, the tank had been moved to a different location. The previous
location was inspected and some white discoloration of soils was ob-
served. The affected area was about 30 ft2 and may have been attributable
to leakage from the fertilizer tank.
2-9
