DISPOSAL PLAN
The method to recover, reuse, decontaminate, or dispose of materials collected after a release has
taken place varies according to the material released. Any waste resulting from a release response
including recovered product, contaminated soil, contaminated equipment and materials, PPE,
decontamination solutions, spent absorbents, and spent chemicals or sludge will be collected within
appropriate, containers compatible with the contents and stored in designated area(s). Waste
disposal will occur in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations. All permits required to
transport or dispose of recovered materials will be obtained by the organizations contracted for
transportation or disposal.
The site will follow the waste management hierarchy guidelines outlined in the following sections to
the extent feasible:
• Waste Inventory and Tracking
• Waste Classification
• Waste Segregation
• Waste Minimization
• Waste Treatment or Disposal
WASTE INVENTORY & TRACKING
To document the amounts and disposal of waste generated during a spill response, the following
guidelines will be implemented:
• Label all waste containers and identify the source of the waste.
• Identify contents of the containers holding wastes and potential hazards (e.g., reactive,
corrosive, flammable, radioactive, etc.).
• Inventory the type and quantity of all wastes generated from a cleanup operation.
• Document the transport, storage, and final disposal of all wastes generated.
WASTE CLASSIFICATION
Liquid wastes, including both oily and non-oily liquids, and solid wastes, including both oily and non-
oily solid wastes, may potentially result from an oil spill. Different types of wastes are generated by
different cleanup methods. The following are typical wastes expected to be generated during
emergency spill and response:
Oily liquid waste:
• Recovered or skimmed oily mixtures
• Oily wastewater
• Wash waters from decontamination procedures
• Wash waters from cleaning boom and other equipment
Non-oily liquid waste:
• Lab wastes
• Non-oily wastewater
• Spent solvents and chemicals
2
