5.0 HEALTH AND SAFETY REQUIREMENTS 5.1 WORK ZONE ACCESS Access within a 30 -foot radius of any on-site operation is prohibited to all but Versar, Inc. field personnel and subcontractors. Standard work practices, such as perfonning field activities in the upwind position, will be observed whenever possible. PPE, indicated in Section 5.4, will be worn by all on-site field personnel, including the subcontractor's personnel. 5.1.1 Exclusion Zones Formal exclusion zones will be setup at the Site to prevent unauthorized entry to the work area. Caution tape and barricades will be used to mark the exclusion zone. Unauthorized personnel will not be permitted near the work zone area. 5.1.2 Decontamination Zone If a fonnal decontamination zone is required, it will be sited upwind from the work zone area. (Decontamination procedures are covered in Section 5.5.) Site personnel will be required to follow the procedures as reported in the corporate Health and Safety Manual. 5.2 AIR/GASNAPOR MONITORING PROCEDURES The greatest potential hazards to safety and health at this Site include: 1) Exposure to petroleum vapors 2) Exposure to toxic gases 3) Exposure to chemical contamination through skin contact and ingestion. In the event that soil and/or groundwater volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is encountered, ongoing air monitoring during project tasks will provide data to ensure that vapor concentrations are within acceptable ranges and that adequate selection criteria for respiratory and dermal protection are provided. A photo -ionization detector (PID) having a 10.6 eV lamp and calibrated to a 100 parts per million (ppm) isobutylene standard is the standard equipment at project sites. If PID readings exceed 100 ppm in the operator breathing zone (OBZ) for 15 minutes, air purifying respirators with organic cartridges must be worn by workers within the OBZ. 30-?8-03/114700.4766.023/JUT .23'03 13
