2.3.1 Fueling Area
One 5,000 -gallon diesel UST, one 10,000 -gallon gasoline UST and a dispenser island with two
dispensers were used for OMS operations vehicle fueling. The USTs were removed in April
1996 (Seward Schreder Construction, 1996). Releases of diesel fuel and gasoline appear to have
occurred from the two UST, although benzene and toluene were not detected in soil samples
collected at the time of UST removal. The highest concentrations of TPH-d and TPH as gasoline
(TPH-g) detected in soil were 12,000 mg/kg and 7,100 mg/kg, respectively. The highest
concentrations of the aromatic hydrocarbons, ethylbenzene and total xylene isomers, detected in
soil were 6.2 mg/kg and 580 mg/kg, respectively. No MTBE was detected in soil samples
collected from the Site. The highest lead concentration detected in soil was 10 mg/kg.
Versar advanced two borings in March 2000 at the former location of the two USTs. The
borings were advanced to 25 feet in depth and sampled at 10, 15, and 20 feet bgs for petroleum
hydrocarbons as gasoline and diesel fuel. TPH-g and TPH-d were detected in each boring at a
depth of 25 feet. One boring contained soil concentrations of TPH-g and TPH-d of 25.4 mg/kg
and 209 mg/kg, respectively. The second boring contained soil concentrations of TPH-g and
TPH-d of 5.9 mg/kg and 8.13 ma/kg, respectively.
2.3.2 Vehicle Inspection Rack
Versar detected petroleum hydrocarbons in March 2000 in shallow soil in the area of the vehicle
inspection rack. The release appears to impact soil to depths greater than 10 feet bgs, and may,
therefore, present a potential impact to groundwater. Jet fuel -weight petroleum hydrocarbons
were detected at a concentration of 10,500 mg/kg at the south end of the vehicle inspection rack.
Oil -weight petroleum hydrocarbons were also detected in soil at this location at a concentration
of 153 mg/kg. TPH-g and TPH-d were detected at concentrations of 9.24 mg/kg and 14.2 mg/kg,
respectively. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were not detected in soil vapor at the 10 -foot
depth.
5
3027-03/ 104700.4766.230/JUL23' 03
