Three soil borings (B30 through B32) will be advanced adjacent to the former location of a
10,000 -gallon diesel UST and 5,000 -gallon gasoline UST removed from the area southeast of the
OMS. The borings will be advanced to a maximum depth of 45 feet. A maximum of eight soil
samples and three grab -groundwater samples (one from each boring) will be collected from the
borings. The soil and groundwater samples will be analyzed for TPH-g, TPH-d, TPH j, BTEX
and five fuel oxygenates.
Two soil borings (B33 and B34) will be advanced adjacent to the vehicle inspection rack located
south of the OMS building. The borings will be advanced to a maximum depth of 45 feet. A
maximum of eight soil samples and two grab -groundwater samples (one from each boring) will
be collected from the borings. The soil and groundwater samples will be analyzed for TPH-g,
TPH-d, TPH j, BTEX and five fuel oxygenates.
3.3.2 Soil Sampling
To evaluate soil conditions, soil borings will be cored using a direct -push sampler. Soil samples
will be selected from cored material collected at five to ten -foot intervals for field or laboratory
analysis, beginning at five feet bgs. Field analysis will be conducted using a Photovac Model
580B photo -ionization detector (PID) or equivalent. A sample will be selected for laboratory
analysis based on field observations and analysis.
The total depth of each soil boring will be 45 feet, or approximately two to five feet below the
depth of first encountered groundwater. If field monitoring and observations indicate significant
contamination, borings may be extended beyond the proposed total depth. Soil samples will be
collected in dedicated butyrate liners. The Versar Site supervisor will ensure that the sampler is
thoroughly cleaned prior to collecting each sample.
A Versar geologist will be on Site to log each boring as it progresses. The soils encountered will
be characterized according to the Unified Soil Classification System (ASTM D-2487), and will
include notations of pertinent characteristics. A geologist registered in the State of California
will review the drill logs produced.
Down -hole equipment, including rods, probes, and sampling equipment, will be thoroughly
cleaned and decontaminated before and after drilling each boring. Pending disposal,
decontamination water generated during the field investigation will be stored in 55 -gallon drums.
Each drum will be labeled with the date of waste accumulation, the waste source, and a contact
phone number.
Soil samples will be screened for volatile organic constituents of concern in the field using the
standard field headspace analysis. Samples for headspace analysis will be placed in a resealable
plastic bag and allowed to warm in the sun or other suitable location. A headspace reading of the
warmed soil will be performed by inserting the intake of the PID into the bag and agitating the
3027-03/104700.4766.230/IUL23'03
