These include: <br /> • Chemical Hazards <br /> • Physical Hazards <br /> • General Safety Hazards <br /> Below,,each of the foregoing hazards is discussed. Even though the concentrations of <br /> petroleum hydrocarbons, including benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes, are <br /> expected to be low, EI personnel will plan for their presence in the working environment <br /> during all phases of work on this site. <br /> 4.1 Chemical Hazards <br /> Toxic substances can enter the body through inhalation, ingestion or skin absorption. <br /> They can enter by more than one route, cause damage at the point of entry and cause <br /> organ damage after being metabolized. The most likely toxic substances to be <br /> encountered at the R & L site are benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes. The <br /> following table lists the contaminants and their respective permissible exposure levels <br /> (PEL).
