Box 1260 PERMIT/SERVICES
Woodbridge, CA 95258
REQUESTFOR TECHNICAL REPORT, ROBERTMONDAYI WINERY, WOODBRIDGE,
SANJOAQUIN COUNTY
The discharge of wastewater at the Robert Mondavi Winery is regulated by Waste Discharge
Requirements (WDRs) Order No. 87-184. Regional Board staff has recently reviewed the groundwater
monitoring data and has determined that the wastewater disposal appears to have degraded the
underlying groundwater quality.
Seven groundwater monitoring wells were installed at the winery site in December 2001 and have been
monitored on a quarterly basis since that time. Staff reviewed the data from the sampling events through
February 2003 and note higher waste constituent concentrations in groundwater samples collected
downgradient of source areas (wastewater ponds and/or land application areas) than the concentrations
reported in samples collected upgradient of the source areas.
Shallow groundwater flow direction has consistently been to the north. Staff evaluated the concentration
distributions of Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen (TKN) and Nitrate as Nitrogen
(NO3-N) to determine if groundwater quality degradation has occurred at the site. The table below
summarizes the average concentrations of those analytes for samples collected between December 2001
and February 2003. Review of the data presented in the table indicates significantly higher
concentrations of TDS, TKN, and NO3-N exist in areas downgradient of source areas than upgradient of
source areas. The well locations and source areas are presented on the attached figure.
SUMMARY OF GROUNDWATER QUALITY DATA AVERAGES
Well ID Relative Location of Well TDS TKN NO3-N
m 1 (mg/1) (mg/1)
MW-1 up-gradient of source area 570.9 .23
MW-2 up-gradient of source area 280 <0<0.23
MW-3 up-gradient of source area 270 4 <0.23
MW-4 down-gradient of source area 550 6 <0,23
MW-5 down-gradient of source area 590 <0,5 30
MW-6 down-gradient of source area 460 <0.5 10
MW-7 down-gradient of source area 540 <0.5 9
California Environmental Protection Agency
Co Recycled Paper
The energy challenge facing California is real.
