KennedyAenks Consultants
T
Section 1: Introduction
Kennedy/Jenks Consultants (Kennedy/Jenks) has prepared this Crop Uptake and Assimilative
Capacity Work Plan (Work Plan) on behalf of R.M.E. Inc. for the Woodbridge Winery
(Woodbridge). This Work Plan has been prepared to address Task 8 of the Woodbridge Cease
and Desist Order(CDO) No. R5-2007-0082 dated 22 June 2007 (CRWQCB, 2007).
1.1 Background
Winery process water generated at Woodbridge is currently treated through a series of four
ponds. The ponds are used as the source of irrigation water for approximately 85 acres of land
application areas. Woodbridge is in the process of designing and constructing a new process
water treatment system that will include a combination of water conservation, source reduction,
biological treatment, and reuse.
Implementation of the treatment system improvements has been divided into three phases.
Phase 1 consists of screening, equalization, anaerobic treatment, and Dissolved Air Flotation
(DAF). Phases 2 and 3 of the process water treatment improvements consist of new aerobic
treatment that will be constructed near the anaerobic facilities. The latter part of phase 2 and 3
of the process water treatment improvements consists of polishing treatment and reuse for
irrigation.
This Work Plan was developed to assess the capacity of the land application area to treat,
remove or otherwise assimilate constituents remaining in the treated process water.
1.2 Site Description
Woodbridge is located at 5950 E. Woodbridge Road, Acampo, in San Joaquin County,
California. The facility and associated land application areas are referred to as "the site" for the
purposes of this Work Plan. The site encompasses approximately 202 acres of property located
in Section 31, Township 4N, Range 7E (Mount Diablo Base & Meridian). The location of the site
is shown on Figure 1. The primary features of the site are shown on Figure 2.
1.3 Objectives
This crop uptake and assimilative capacity assessment for Woodbridge's land application area
is intended to assess the capacity of the site to treat, remove or otherwise assimilate process
water constituents. Task 8 of the CDO requires the following:
"By 15 January 2008, the Discharger shall submit a Crop Uptake Analysis Work plan. The
work plan shall describe a study designed to determine the amount of FDS and nitrogen that
crops grown at this site will take up, and will be removed during harvest. The objective of the
study is to determine the pounds per acre that may be applied to the land application area
that will not result in an increase in these constituents over background groundwater quality.
The study shall include ash testing and shall be completed over two cropping seasons (2008
and 2009)".
Crop Uptake and Assimilative Capacity Work Plan, Page 1
Woodbridge Winery, Acampo, California
