C. Biological Indicator 0 <br />1. Utilize f 1296 Rapid Readout tubes. <br />2. Tubes will be discarded as medical waste 30 days prior to the expiration date. <br />3. New tubes will be ordered 45 days prior to the expiration date of the stock on <br />hand Environmental Services. <br />4. Engineering will inventory the tubes each odd month of the year. The inventory <br />will include: <br />a. The number of tubes <br />b. The respective expiration dates <br />c. The lot number <br />D. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) <br />1. Engineering Department will order all necessary PPE which includes the <br />following: <br />a. Safety Goggles <br />b. Nitrile and/or heat resistant gloves <br />c. Gown <br />2. Staff will always wear PPE during this procedure. <br />E. Loading of the Medical Waste and Biological Indicator <br />1. The Engineer verifies the 3M Biological Indicator Test Pack and the Control <br />Spore Tube are from the same manufacturer and lot number. <br />2. The date and the lot number for each 3M Biological Indicator Test Pack and <br />Control Spore Tube are verified prior to giving the 3M Biological Indicator Test <br />Pack to the Environmental Services (EVS) Aide. <br />a. If the lot number indicates the 3M Biological Test Packs have <br />expired, they are not to be used, and the Medical Waste <br />Sterilizer is to be taken out of service until new replacement Test <br />Packs have been received. <br />b. Notify the Environmental Health and Safety Department, the <br />Engineering Department, and the Environmental Services <br />Department. <br />The EVS Aide loads the chamber half way with red bags enclosed in <br />autoclavable bags. (Each autoclave bag must be punctured for ventilation) and <br />places the 3M Biological Indicator Test Pack on the top of the bag in the center of <br />the load, additional bags will be placed on top of the indicator. The EVS Aide will <br />run the cycle which is approximately 45 minutes of which 30 minutes must <br />be sterilization at no less than 250 degrees Fahrenheit. <br />4. After the cycle is complete, and the Sterilizer chamber has been allowed to cool, <br />the EVS Aide opens the chamber and removes the processed 3M Biological <br />Indicator Test Pack from the. <br />a. The 3M Biological Indicator Test Pack is allowed to cool prior to <br />handling and processing. <br />Spore Testing/EC.SA.081 Page 2 of <br />
