Ll <br />Step <br />Action <br />Isolate, Evacuate, and <br />Isolate spill area. Evacuate everyone from the area surrounding <br />Secure area <br />spill (entire room if necessary) except for those responsible with <br />the spill clean up. Secure area. <br />PPE <br />If not already worn, put on personal protective equipment. <br />Contain Spill <br />Stop source of spill, if possible. <br />Confine Spill <br />Confine spill to initial spill area using appropriate control <br />equipment and material. Avoid generating airborne powder or <br />aerosols. <br />• Powder Spill: Cover spilled powder with wet absorbent <br />gauze or damp disposable towels, sheets, and spill pillows. <br />• Liquid Spill: Contain and gently cover spilled liquid with <br />absorbent gauze pads, absorbent towels, sheets or <br />absorbent pillow. <br />Spill Area Cleanup <br />• Broken Glass: Pick up broken glass using small scoop <br />(never the hands). Put glass in puncture proof container. <br />Put container into hazardous waste container. <br />• Spill Waste: Pick up pillow, towels and any other materials <br />used to clean the spill and put them into a leak proof <br />container. Label the container with name of hazardous <br />material. Wipe up residual material. Clean spill are surface <br />3 times with a detergent solution. Rinse with clean water. <br />• Reusable spill supplies: Collect supplies and remove gross <br />contamination. Wipe surfaces so they are free of visible <br />contamination. Place into separate container for equipment <br />that will be thoroughly washed with mild detergent water. <br />• Clothing and Linen: Put any contaminated laboratory <br />coats, gowns or linens into a separate soled linen bag. <br />Label as contaminated with chemotherapy. <br />• Biological Safety Cabinets: An extensive spill (one vial or > <br />950 ml) within a biological safety cabinet necessitates <br />decontamination of all interior surfaces after completion of <br />spill cleanup. Use of Half Face cartridge respirator is <br />recommended, if the HEPA filter is contaminated, label and <br />seal the unit in plastic until the filter can be changed. <br />Disposal Procedure <br />Important: Contact EH&S for assistance with waste <br />determination and proper disposal procedures. <br />Reporting <br />Follow appropriate s ill notification procedures. <br />Safety Management Program 92. <br />Attachment EC.HZ.056A <br />
