MERCURY <br />Substances covered: <br />Cantor tubes Bougie/Red Maloney esophageal dialator <br />Thermometers Sphygmomanometers <br />Barometers Mercuric Chloride <br />Health hazards: <br />• Mercury and mercury vapors are rapidly absorbed by membranes of respiratory tract, GI <br />tract and skin. <br />• Short term exposure may cause erosion of respiratory/GI tracts, nausea, vomiting, bloody <br />diarrhea, shock, headache, metallic taste. <br />• Inhalation of high concentrations can cause pneumonitis, chest pain, dyspnea, coughing, <br />stomatitis, gingivitis and salivation. <br />Equipment Needed: <br />Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): <br />• Chemical Resistant Gloves <br />• Impervious Apron or Coveralls <br />• Goggles <br />• Impervious Foot Covers <br />Control Materials: <br />• Mercury spill kit <br />• Scoop <br />• Hazardous Waste Containers (leak proof containers/drums ) <br />• Mercury Indicator Powder <br />• Sponge with amalgam <br />• Vapor Suppressor <br />• Absorbent <br />• Spatula <br />• Disposable Towels <br />1.
