Evacuate immediate area within 10 feet of spill <br />Secure area <br />for small spills (thermometer), entire room if spill occurs in small <br />room. Evacuate area within 20 feet of spill for larger spills <br />cantor tube or larger), entire room if needed. Secure area. <br />PPE <br />If not already worn, put on personal protective equipment. <br />Contain Spill <br />Stop source of spill, if possible. <br />Confine Spill <br />Confine spill to initial spill area using appropriate control <br />equipment and material. Ensure the area is well ventilated. <br />Mercury Spill Kit <br />Slowly absorb spilled mercury into sponge and place in provided <br />box. <br />Clean Spill <br />Activate mercury sponge with water. Slowly absorb spilled <br />mercury. Review and follow instruction on container. Add water <br />to activator. <br />Spill Area Cleanup <br />• Spill Waste: Collect mercury sponge containers and all <br />contaminated disposable equipment and put into a hazardous <br />waste container. <br />• Reusable spill supplies: (e.g., goggles) Collect supplies and <br />remove gross contamination. Wipe surfaces so they are free <br />of visible contamination. Place into separate container for <br />equipment that will be thoroughly washed and <br />decontaminated. <br />Disposal Procedure <br />Important: Label with appropriate hazardous waste label and <br />DOT diamond label. Contact EVS for evaluation of spill clean-up <br />and waste determination. If the mercury spill occurs on <br />carpeting, contact EH&S. <br />Reporting <br />Follow appropriate internal and external spill notification <br />procedures. <br />Safety Management Program 26. <br />Attachment EC.HZ.056A <br />
