Types of medical Waste generated: <br />• Clinical and other biological waste <br />• Sharps (needles, syringes, blades etc.) <br />• Patient care items from rooms or areas in which special isolation precautions have <br />been utilized <br />• Pharmaceutical waste — Non -hazardous <br />• Pathological and surgical waste <br />2. Estimated monthly amount of medical waste generated: <br />• Kaiser Permanente Stockton generates approximately 350 pounds/month <br />3. Medical waste handling procedures utilized: <br />(a) Onsite location and method for segregation, containment, packaging, labeling, <br />and collection <br />Each department is responsible for separating bio -hazardous waste at the point of <br />origin and disposing of them in containers lined with red infectious waste bags or, if <br />red bags are temporarily unavailable, in containers clearly marked on all sides with <br />words " Bio -Hazardous Waste". Sharps are to be contained first in locked, impervious <br />bio -hazardous containers. Pharmaceutical wastes are segregated, contained and <br />labeled with "incineration only" on the top and side and are removed from the facility <br />within 90 days. Pathology waste will be place into a rigid container with a tight- <br />fitting lid and labeled with "pathology waste" on the top and side of the container. <br />Reusable rigid containers are used to transport medical waste from the department to <br />the containment area. These containers shall be maintained in a clean and sanitary <br />manner. The method of decontamination is exposure to germicide solution for a <br />minimum of three minutes or exposure to hot water of at least 180 degrees Fahrenheit <br />for a minimum of 15 seconds. <br />Rev 02/04 <br />I <br />
